Arkadiou monastery

A fortress-like monastery built during Venetian period in 16th century, was a cultural centre of science and art, had a school with a library. Played important role in the fight against the Turks, famous is for the heroic feat in 1866, when 943 Greeks, mostly women and children blew up the gunpowder magazine, choosing sacrifice rather than surrender.
